Her Visions Art
Hildegard of Bingen’s illuminations are a series of 26-36 vibrant, symbolic visionary paintings from her treatise Scivias (“Know the Ways of the Lord”), created around 1142–1152. These images, created under her supervision (likely for the Rupertsberg manuscript), illustrate her cosmic, theological visions of light, fire, and divine order, detailing her intense spiritual experiences of the cosmos.
The imagery is strikingly original for the 12th century, depicting the universe as a living, interconnected whole—pulsing with divine energy. Circles within circles, luminous human forms, celestial spheres, and flowing patterns of fire and water reveal a cosmos infused with intelligence and purpose.
